Buddha's Delight (Simplified Chinese: 罗汉斋; Traditional Chinese: 羅漢齋; Pinyin: Luóhàn zhāi) is a Chinese vegetarian mixed stew of vegetables, fungi, tofu skins, and other plant ingredients—associated with Buddhist vegetarian cooking and often served at Lunar New Year for symbolic purity and abundance.[1]
Characteristics
Many textures in one pot: crunchy bamboo, soft tofu skin, spongy mushrooms. Sauce is savory from soy and fermented seasonings without meat stock in strict vegetarian versions.
Ingredients (overview)
Napa cabbage, tofu skin, wood ear, shiitake, bamboo shoot, cellophane noodles, soy, and other vegetables—ingredient counts vary; "eighteen" items appear in some traditional lists.
History and culture
Rooted in Buddhist temple and home vegetarian practice; overseas Chinese restaurants popularized the English menu name "Buddha's Delight." Related festive vegetarian ideas appear across Chinese New Year tables.
