Turnip Cake (Simplified Chinese: 萝卜糕; Traditional Chinese: 蘿蔔糕; Pinyin: Luóbo gāo; Cantonese: lo bak go) is a savory cake of shredded daikon radish and rice flour, steamed then commonly pan-fried for Dim Sum. Despite the English name, the vegetable is daikon (white radish), not Western turnip.[1]

Characteristics

Interior is soft and savory; pan-fried faces are golden and crisp. Bits of cured meat or mushroom often stud the cake.

Ingredients (overview)

Daikon, rice flour (sometimes with starch), cured pork or sausage, dried shrimp or mushroom, salt, and white pepper. New Year loaves may be larger.

History and culture

Serving and variations

Sliced and pan-fried, with chili sauce or hoisin-style dips. See Dim Sum and Chinese Snack.
