Spring Roll (Simplified Chinese: 春卷; Traditional Chinese: 春捲; Pinyin: Chūn juǎn) is a thin-wrapped roll filled with vegetables and/or meat, most often deep-fried until crisp. Fresh (unfried) versions also exist in some regions.[1]

Characteristics

Fried spring rolls are cylindrical or rectangular with a shatteringly crisp wrapper. Fillings are usually finely cut so they cook quickly and stay juicy without soaking the skin.

Ingredients (overview)

Wheat or other thin wrappers, shredded cabbage or other vegetables, meat or seafood optional, seasonings, and oil for frying. Dipping sauces vary.

History and culture

Spring rolls appear nationwide and in overseas Chinese cooking; Fujian and other southern street-food scenes often list them among casual snacks. The name links historically to spring festival foods, though everyday fried rolls are year-round.

Serving and variations

Snack or appetizer, sometimes cut on the bias. See Chinese Snack and Fujian Food; related fried snacks include Guotie.
