Luckin Coffee (Simplified Chinese: 瑞幸咖啡; Pinyin: Ruìxìng kāfēi) is a Chinese coffee chain known for app-led ordering, value pricing, and dense pickup-store networks. On Chinese Food Wiki it is treated as a coffee-category and urban-drink culture entry—not a store guide or promotions page. The brand is frequently discussed together with modern tea shops when media map youth café habits under Chinese Drink.
History and expansion
Luckin was incorporated in October 2017 and opened early shops in Beijing and Shanghai in early 2018. Rapid store growth and coupon-heavy marketing made it a high-profile challenger to international café brands in China’s still-underpenetrated coffee market. The company completed a Nasdaq initial public offering on 17 May 2019 under the ticker LK.
In 2020 an internal investigation reported that 2019 sales figures had been fabricated on a large scale (company disclosures cited roughly RMB 2.2 billion). Shares collapsed, trading was halted, and Nasdaq delisted the company on 29 June 2020; ADSs later traded over-the-counter (LKNCY). After U.S. restructuring proceedings and a change in controlling ownership associated with Centurium Capital, Luckin returned to expansion under new management.
Overseas openings followed: Singapore from March 2023, later Malaysia, and first U.S. cafés in New York City in July 2025. Company investor materials stated 31,048 stores worldwide as of 31 December 2025 (self-operated and partnership formats combined), with the large majority in China including Hong Kong. Scale figures change quickly and should be checked against current filings.
Products and brand style
Luckin’s street presence is built around small-footprint cafés and pickup points rather than large sit-down coffeehouses. Ordering is centered on a mobile app; classic espresso drinks, milk coffees, and seasonal limited cups dominate the public image. Price positioning is generally described as value or mid-low relative to premium international chains. Occasional tea–coffee crossover SKUs sit culturally near drinks such as Yuenyeung, while leaf-tea context remains on Tea.
Culture and collaborations
Beyond retail coffee, Luckin is widely observed in Chinese social media for frequent limited themes and character or entertainment IP drops—ranging from anime returns to Disney villain meme campaigns. Such short-run cups and merch create queue and “谷” (collectible) talk similar to new-tea marketing cycles. Dated brand × IP events are archived on Drink IP Collab Timeline rather than listed here as evergreen claims. Encyclopedia comparison often places Luckin in the coffee layer of urban drink culture next to new-tea names such as Heytea and Nayuki.
