Pineapple Bun (Simplified Chinese: 菠萝包; Traditional Chinese: 菠蘿包; Pinyin: Bōluó bāo; Cantonese: bo lo bao) is a sweet yeast bun topped with a crisp, sugary crust whose crackled pattern resembles pineapple skin. Despite the name, the classic bun usually contains no pineapple filling.[1]

Characteristics

Soft, slightly sweet bread contrasts with a crunchy, cookie-like top. A popular variant is served hot, split with a slab of butter (菠萝油).

Ingredients (overview)

Yeast dough (flour, sugar, milk or water, fat) plus a separate sugary topping dough that cracks in the oven. Butter is optional for the filled-style service.

History and culture

The bun is closely identified with Hong Kong bakery and cha chaan teng culture and is also found in Cantonese bakeries abroad. It is a casual everyday snack rather than a festival-only food.

Serving and variations

Eaten plain or as pineapple bun with butter, often with Hong Kong Milk Tea. See Hong Kong Food and Chinese Snack.
