Mooncake (Simplified Chinese: 月饼; Traditional Chinese: 月餅; Pinyin: Yuèbǐng) is a rich pastry traditionally eaten and gifted during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Fillings range from lotus-seed paste and salted egg yolk to nuts, beans, and modern flavors; regional crusts include Cantonese chewy skins and flaky Jiangsu-style layers.[1]

Characteristics

Classic Cantonese mooncakes are dense, sweet, and often stamped with festive characters; flaky styles shatter into layers. Salted yolks add savoriness inside sweet paste.

Ingredients (overview)

Wheat flour crusts, syrup or oil depending on style, and fillings such as lotus paste, red bean, nuts, or meat in some savory traditions. Contemporary snow-skin and ice-cream versions exist.

History and culture

Mooncakes are a major seasonal gift food in Chinese culture, tied to Mid-Autumn moon-viewing customs. Bakeries compete yearly with traditional and inventive flavors while the pastry remains a festival symbol.

Serving and variations
